The day after Cinco de Mayo is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and the month of May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention day. I meant to write about it yesterday but completely forgot. Sorry about that!
From an article on the Secret Life website:
"One great way to think about it is to imagine certain situations and decide what you would do in the moment. Let’s take an example that’s familiar to all Secret Life fans:
What if you were hanging out, and making out, with a guy who you thought was kind of cute and kind of sexy, who had a reputation as a ladies man but who seemed really interested in just you. You feel attracted to him and you can tell he’s attracted to you too, and even though you’ve never really spent time together before right now, one thing leads to another, and you start getting really intimate. You’re kinda of freaking out – so excited to be with this guy, so surprised at how easy it is to be with him – so happy and electric and nervous that you’ll do or say the wrong thing. He’s clearly not a virgin but you are and when he makes a move to have sex with you, do you:
A) Get lost in the heat of the moment and led him take the lead – you never imagined your first time would be like this!
B) Pull back for a minute and insist he use a condom.
C) Keep it all above the waist – it’s the first time you’ve ever even hooked up with this guy! Even if he is “the one” he doesn’t need to be the one right now.
D) Make an excuse why you have to leave – curfew or your friends are waiting for you or you have a stomach ache – but promise you’ll call or text him tomorrow and make plans for a real date.
It’s pretty obvious that Amy went with something like option “A” on that fateful night at band camp. It’s also quite likely that she never really thought about it beforehand – what she would say or do in a moment like that. But you can do it differently – take some time to think about what sex and pregnancy would mean in your life and how it would change things for you. Decide what you would do BEFORE the moment arrives – it’s a lot easier to think clearly that way. If you’re going to have sex make sure you use protection. That means figuring it out ahead of time – what kind, where will you get it, how does it work, etc. Or if you don’t want to have sex yet – which is really the only foolproof way of avoiding pregnancy – what will you say when the time comes.
Teen pregnancy is a really big deal. It takes two people to get pregnant but only one to prevent it. You can be that one. Have you thought about it? Tell us in the comments!
